Message from the owners

To all Heart of Ottawa patients,

 In 2006, we became active members of the Centertown community when we purchased the pharmacy at the corner of Elgin Street and Somerset, known as White Cross Dispensary.  We quickly discovered that the people who live in this area are simply wonderful people and such a pleasure to serve.   It is a genuine pleasure for us to come into work every day and help our patients with their healthcare needs.  It also quickly became apparent to us that this area was underserviced by family physicians and the situation was about to get worse when the previous walk-in clinic on Elgin closed its doors in June 2011.

 It was then, in 2011, when the space came available for rent that we decided to build a medical clinic for the community. We took out all of our savings and got some help needed from the bank and we made a plan to build it, furnish it and manage its operation.  We named it Heart of Ottawa Medical Center and the people living in the Centertown area and the Golden Triangle area, also known as the Heart of Ottawa, were given priority to be registered.  Our intention was to build it and subsidize it up until it was staffed by 7 family physicians who would then ensure it self-sustainability. It was never our intention to turn a profit, nor was it to take a salary.  For the last 6 years, it is our team of dedicated employees who can take credit for the way this clinic looks and how it is run.  We have hired the proper staff and we ensured that the physicians had all the resources needed to practice their profession.

 In early 2017, after 6 years of donating time and commitment to this project, we were still subsidizing the operational cost of the clinic. We approached the 7 physicians to renegotiate their agreements and when that effort failed we offered to sell them the clinic so that they could then control their own expenses and run it as they wished.  We were happy to have agreed on a selling price.  We tried our best to negotiate with the physicians a lease that would ensure a long term agreement at a competitive price.  We wanted them to stay for a very long time and we matched neighbouring leases. We tried our best to have the physicians stay at this current location.  After working so hard to create such a wonderful clinic, the last thing we wanted was to lose them.

 It is with great regret that after 9 months of negotiation, we are announcing today that the physicians have decided to move their practice to a new location.  Their decision is incomprehensible to us.   Patients will remain registered with each doctor but will need to travel to a new location to be serviced by them.

We are sincerely saddened  by their decision as you may also be.   We remain committed to our community and we are actively recruiting for another group of physicians who will take over our beautiful fully furnished medical office space.  It would be a great disappointment for us and for the community, to have such a beautiful clinic go to waste.

The Heart of Ottawa Medical Centre will remain open until March 15, 2018.  We will try to keep you informed of any new development in this matter. You have our commitment that the level of service you have been accustomed to will remain.

We appreciate your loyalty, confidence and we remain open to your comments and questions.

 Important Information about our Family Health Organization

When you become a rostered patient at Heart of Ottawa, you and your doctor both sign an Ontario Ministry of Health contract that confirms that you are part of our practice. For patients, signing this contract indicates that you will call your family doctor at Heart of Ottawa first, when in need of medical care, and that you will avoid  seeing  other doctors, except in very special circumstances.

For the doctor, the contract means that they will provide you with comprehensive primary care services and offer after-hours and same-day care within certain guidelines.  Because Heart of Ottawa works in a team setting, doctors cover for each other on the days they are not available and provide a level of care that was not previously possible.

Your doctor is paid to provide your primary care medical services and if you seek care elsewhere (Urgent Care, Other Walk-in Clinics, Weight Loss Centres) your doctor and their facility are charged for your visit. If you are seeking a service you feel your doctor does not provide, then discuss with your doctor where you should seek those services and they will provide you with a referral when those services are needed.

Not sure what to do? Call your health care family at Heart of Ottawa first for any non-emergency health needs. You can book an appointment or be seen for urgent after care appointments by calling us at 613-230-8885.

Emergency issues should still be seen at a hospital emergency department.

 If you have health questions outside of our clinic hours, or are unsure if your health issue is an emergency, please contact the Telehealth Ontario Advisory Nurse, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week toll free at ph: 1-866-797-0000.

Your health matters to us!  Working together in this way will allow us to provide the best continuity of care to you.

Our walk-in clinic for the general public is now permanently closed.  Our doctors see their own rostered patients by appointment only.  If you are a former walk-in patient and wish to arrange to have your chart transferred to another doctor or clinic, please sign a “Consent to Release Personal Information” form at your new doctor’s office, clearly identifying your agreement to have a copy of your chart transferred to your doctor.   This form should be mailed to us with your original signature.  A member of our staff will contact you within 6 weeks to make arrangements for payment.

PLEASE NOTE:  Due to the nature of the patient – doctor relationship, we do not wish to use email as a means of communication with the public or patients:

i)              regarding questions or issues of a medical nature;

ii)             to establish physician/patient relationships;

iii)            to book, cancel or change appointments; or
